After Stanley Kunitz, for dVerse Poets Pub
I hazard a look through my supervisor’s electron microscope — and the iridescent image swims through a mirror that flows.1
Matter becomes energy, right before my eyes.
Science takes a mystic turn.
- The portion of this line after the dash is from Stanley Kunitz’s poem King of the River ↩︎

A close friend of mine is a surgical pathologist … I’ve looked at those images a few times, your description of what meets the eye while looking through an electron microscope is perfection. A great write. Cheers.

I think our high school chemistry text had an electron micrograph on it

Or maybe it was an ion micrograph, of the tip of a needle…something like this but in colour https://www.instagram.com/p/C-_tO_gRiwE/?igsh=Z3dnY3EwaDVmcDY0

I love it when science meets the mystical. That kind of intersection fills us with a kind of humility and awe that we can so often lose sight of. What a splendid use of Kunitz’s line!

Short and sweet, Catherin. Science meets poetry through a microscope — mystical magic.

Such a fascinating and inspiring response to the prompt. I had a microscope kit when I was a kid, and the river movements remind me of looking at tiny drops of blood, pricked from my own finger.

could you see the blood moving?

Many scientists find mor wonder through microscopes than answers. To the most powerful point! Well done. (Thanks again for your editing guidance. ❤ )

Science, as per some scientists I read, talk about the mystery of science, the mystery of life and you capture that beautifully.
