white crockery boot with a ball of rainbow yarn in the top, sitting on a cafe table

What a crock

Written for Central Coast Poets Inc August meeting

Before me
on the table
sits a boot.

A crockery boot.
Jim’s mother’s crockery boot
from the 60s.

It’s white and weighty.
A kilo at least.
Is it a vase?

It’s from Japan,
trimmed with
a fake buckle bow.

Someone’s put yarn in the top.
Pastel rainbow yarn.
Was that a joke?

The boot has a heel
and a solid square toe
that’d pack a painful punch.

Thank you, Jim.
I had a hunch, around lunch
you’d come through
with our prompt.

But in future
please,
no shoes
upon the table!
