I am the fabric on your bed,
constantly sat on
by computers, books, bums,
three cats, and various bags.
Puncture holes and pulled threads
came from unclipped claws.
I’m blue-yellow bright!
linted with fluff and bits of leaves
(the leavings of socks and
feline fiends)
plus your dandruff
and the odd flying ant.
A quilt’s commentary (v2)
Blue-yellow bright, buttoned,
I’m pulled and punctured
by unclipped claws.
I underscore your life,
cover your sleep.
A bed lined with fur and flecked with leaves
(the leavings of socks and
feline fiends),
books, bums, bags,
dead skin,
collected cats,
the odd flying ant.

no flying ant here, but cat claws and stuff abundant…

A nice choice of object. I imagine it was a challenge to keep nostalgia out of the picture!

I’m working on mine and it is very challenging to keep within the parameters Dennis set!

My quilt’s voice falls very flat, without the use of those other meaningful devices! But I think a shop bought quilt should be a boring conversationalist

I know my quilts might have lots to say!!

Wow very clever and well done. I found the parameters quite challenging as well. As I’m sentimental about most things. I almost felt sorry for my object.

I love both versions, Catherin! Those feline fiends made me laugh. 😁

Catherin, the second version is pared back, more in control, and adheres to what the prompt was pushing for. Staying in the moment is the hard part here, and I can see the first version slipping toward commentary. The second version holds the line: the object, what it endures, nothing extra. Spot on.

Thank you Dennis for the feedback! I tend not to edit enough, hence me going back for a second try.

A perfect take. Poor fabric, no emotions attached.

Flying ants! Such a thing exists?

oh yes…young queens have to be able to fly to establish their new nests

We have many species of ants where I am and most give a nasty bite too. I don’t believe I’ve seen any fly though. There are plenty of other flying things though.

I love the voice here — that “computers, books, bums” line really made me smile. The whole vibe feels fun and lived-in.
