Bed with a cat and a handbag. The cat is walking away from the camera. The bedcover is wrinkled.

A quilt cover comments:

I am the fabric on your bed,
constantly sat on
by computers, books, bums,
three cats, and various bags.

Puncture holes and pulled threads
came from unclipped claws.
I’m blue-yellow bright!
linted with fluff and bits of leaves

(the leavings of socks and
feline fiends)
plus your dandruff
and the odd flying ant.

A quilt’s commentary (v2)

Blue-yellow bright, buttoned,
I’m pulled and punctured
by unclipped claws.
I underscore your life,

cover your sleep.
A bed lined with fur and flecked with leaves
(the leavings of socks and
feline fiends),

books, bums, bags,
dead skin,
collected cats,
the odd flying ant.

  1. Catherin, the second version is pared back, more in control, and adheres to what the prompt was pushing for. Staying in the moment is the hard part here, and I can see the first version slipping toward commentary. The second version holds the line: the object, what it endures, nothing extra. Spot on.
