Writing resolutions for the big ’26

Happy New Year, everyone! I’m posting from midnight exactly in Australia. And in place of NY resolutions…my poeting+ goals for 2026!

  1. To continue blogging daily here for the entire year.
  2. To prepare the manuscript for my first collection, Words Like Light.
  3. To go on my first writing retreat.
  4. To successfully promote my new poetic form, the longette/longette lite:
    a) releasing a monthly prompt throughout the year
    b) running the first annual cooperatition, in Nov–Dec 2026
    c) publishing everyone’s submissions (or as many as possible)
    d) printing and distributing the related stickers.
  5. To get another place or commendation in a poetry or fiction competition.
  6. To write at least a poem a week.
  7. To get to know the other poets in the 2026 Flying Islands Press Nonstop Poetry workshop— and to learn from them, from Kit Kelen and from the guest speakers.
  8. To write 12 short stories in 12 months (Deadlines for Writers challenge).

EDIT [1 Jan 2026, dawn]:
This list does seem like rather a lot in the light of the new day…but I think aiming high is probably good? Whatever I end up achieving this year writing-wise, it’s bound to be more than the year before, and the years before that : )

EDIT [12 Jan 2026]:

9. To attend both Bankstown Poetry Slam and Saltwater Poetry Slam for the first time.
10. To read or perform a work Saltwater Poetry Slam and (stretch goal) at Bankstown Poetry Slam (audience up to 2000 people!).
11. To work on slam technique.

Thank you if you read all this way! And, if you’d like to share, what are some of your writing or life goals for this new year?

    1. I wish you the best. Those are some lofty goals!

I’m not making any resolutions because I usually forget them before the end of January. Life happens.
