Under a ceiling-mounted screen,
nerve block applied,
drilling commences.
Every muscle’s tight despite my conscious
reminders to unclench—that I’m in
no real danger. Truly, though,
everything seems far from okay.
Above me, tropical fish nose crown-of-
thorns starfish on a bleached coral reef.
How is that supposed to be calming?

I was in the chair this summer and there was a TV in front of me. Nothing but news and Trump. I’d gladly take a starfish and coral reef!

Yes, it was better than the usual ads for netflix for sure. Still, our famous Great Barrier Reef here, world heritage listed, long beleagured by the predatory crown of thorns starfish, is in its death throes now from ocean acidfication and bleaching…yes, climate change. We’re understandably sensitive about this issue

Some of the rooms have beautiful picture windows out onto a creek with native plantings, and if on this side we always see a water dragon or two (kind of large lizard with attitude)
