Giraffa camelopardalis

Of the zoo animals
I identify most with her—
even though she’s
graceful, svelte,
large eyed, glorious lashes.

Our necks are too long;
we seem out of place;
and we’re both trapped
in beautiful places
we can’t enjoy.

Her backdrop, Sydney Harbour,
gorgeous to human eyes,
is no savannah.
She, penned beside it,
doesn’t look.

My environs are littoral too:
bays, beaches, forested hills.
But I rarely enjoy them.
I favour my room, especially the bed.
Spent tissues do look a bit like oysters.
