End-friends

Old friends are good
but new friends are newer
Old friends were new friends
and new friends get older

My friends were your friends
and your friends now my friends;
some can be ‘our friends’,
and their friends—and their friends!

When friends turn against you
it smarts like a burn,
a sharp papercut
or a blackberry thorn

Children can hate you
as they grow up
If they’re there at the end
I guess that’s enough
