Episode 26

Javier Belarte, talent scout, drug lord etc. rode his hoverboard with far less aplomb than the masterful Sophie Niveau. Youth played a role.

Designer Niveau had grown up in a far more technologically advanced world than had Belarte. And in much more affluent—if lonelier—conditions.

Javier was supposed to be in jail. So why, then, was he out here in the lesser arrondissements shooting a surreptitious fashion commercial?

Quite simply, it was because Sophie Niveau wanted him to be. And because her mother was President.

Jambeau Renard, meanwhile, was still lying where he’d fallen, stiff like a tree. The pyjama-model’s eyes were wide open, but he wasn’t moving.

Clumsily dismounting the hoverboard, which sassily flew off without him, Javier dropped to a crouch beside his protegé, Jam. The bulky prison anklet, not to mention his arthritic knees, made the position awkward.

Inside the warehouse, mogul Brandon de Bras had caught up with the de Bagué sisters.

“Ladies—I swear I didn’t know about the set-up,” he beseeched, “But now that we find ourselves in these circumstances … may I at least … pour you some Champagne?”

Agent Celeste de Bagué grimaced. “Merci! I do NOT drink! Certainement Pas when I am in such conditions of not knowing who I may Trust!”

Journaliste Marguerite dithered. Part of her wanted to accept, but … she should really show solidarity with Celeste. God knew she could use a drink after that utter shitshow.
