Sophie Niveau—fashion designer by day, extreme puppet master by night—now pushed open her window fully, barking “Somebody turn off the damn smoke machines!” along with a few other terse orders.

Marguerite de Bagué, journaliste extraordinaire, full of self-loathing that she had not seen any of this coming, now turned the full force of her ire on her sometime love-interest Brandon de Bras, media mogul and recent captive…or was it—actor?

“You. Knew.” Marguerite stabbed at him—staccato, icy, soul-destroying.

“Chérie, non!” he attempted. He really hadn’t known, and the brush with anticipated death had left his heart clearly visible on his sleeve. Never before had he spoken to his Daisy this informally, nor with such clear affection.

Marg’s eyes widened at the endearment. She melted incrementally, then gathered herself and stormed off, back to the warehouse, where the models now appeared to be…helping themselves to Champagne?! It seemed they, at least, had been party to this hellish charade.

Agent Celeste trailed after her sister, struck dumb. Neither had seen any of this coming—not even slightly—and it didn’t reflect well on their investigative credentials. They should both just give up and move to Provence. It was unforgivable.

A swooshing sound made the sisters pause their self-castigations and look up.

Sophie Niveau came sweeping down from her second-floor spy window by hoverboard— followed closely on another board by none other than—
