Winter is coming—
this Snow knows—
so he tends
to his watch fires
and cattle
‘long the creek wall.

Watch out!
Koalas about!
augur signs along the track—
for they can drop
without warning
post-dusk, pre-dawning.

These fires alone
stand between Snow
and sure, sudden death.
For winter is coming
when the drop bears drop
when the cold claws in.
