Heaven is … bad poetry

By guest poet par excellence Jessica Perini1

Heaven is my window
framing bright my day2
Heaven is a paw step
turned my sleepy way
Heaven is your dream-swept eyes;
a creeping smile when I awake3

Heaven is my woolly gown;
a warm embrace against the cold
Heaven is the kiss I get
each morning, never old

Heaven is a sunflower—
head pivots to grey dawn
Heaven is a “whattttttt?”
as I open the coop door

Heaven is the smell of yeast
rising with the sun
Heaven is the promise of each day;
a million tasks undone

Heaven is a check-in
to see who said hello
Heaven is a story to unfold:
a word, a phrase, but not yet told4

Heaven is a seed head
as it pushes through the soil
Heaven is a bead of sweat;
frost’s falling morning roil5

Heaven is a promised trip,
clanking keys on rail
Heaven is excitement’s rip,
whole body wag of tail6

Heaven is every day above grass,
every day we breathe the air
Heaven is the season’s grip
lessening to days more fair7

Heaven is this moment
stitched through each dewdrop;8
Heaven is this poem contrived
to make the pages pop.9
