‘I Said to Poetry’ by Alice Walker

I love this poem and maybe you will too. I stopped waiting for inspiration to strike and started doing a daily practice using prompts from @promptsbyjasmine on instagram. It was a revelation. I began to write about so many things I would never have considered. Maybe you will, too!

this is an all-time favorite of mine. for anyone who has a creative bone in them and has at one point or another lay in bed in the wee hours of the morning, trying to sleep but had that line nibbling away at you, calling you to put it on paper… and how many times have you drifted away from conversation and scribbled on a paper towel, what was first just one line that soon became an entire poem, a story or even a letter?

I Said to Poetry – Alice Walker

I said to Poetry:”I’m finished
with you.”
Having to almost die
before some weird light
comes creeping through
is no fun.
“No thank you, Creation,
no muse need apply.
Im out for good times–
at the very least,
some painless convention.”

Poetry laid back
and played dead
until this morning.
I wasn’t sad or anything,
only restless.
