The descent from the highway at Kariong is steep, through weed, wildflower, fern, and the aptly named razor grass, which can easily slice open the palm of an unwary walker reaching for a handhold. A chain bolted into the rock at one point aids the climb, particularly on the return.
At this time of year, the ground is thick, in places, with decorative bark (the gums are moulting), which constantly slides beneath your feet, increasing the difficulty of making purchase.
A short walk through head-high undergrowth and over boulders from Kendall’s Chair, you might be lucky enough to find Three Penny Cave, which sports Australian pennies from 1938 (please leave them as you find them) and various rock workings of uncertain age.
